'Twilight': David Slade confirmed as 'Eclipse' director

Summit Entertainment has confirmed that "Hard Candy" director David Slade will helm
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third installment in the series of movies based on
Stephenie Meyer's blockbuster books. Yesterday, EW reported that Slade had been in
talks for the job. In a press release, the studio said that Slade will direct Eclipse, which
has a screenplay by Melissa Rosenberg and will be released on June 30, 2010.
In sharp contrast with "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke and "New Moon" helmer
Weitz, the genre-fave filmmaker has made a name for himself with cold, visceral, often
brutal films. Slade's low-budget debut "Hard Candy" raised eyebrows with its tale of a
14-year-old girl getting revenge on a 32-year-old pedophile — and put "Watchmen"
star Patrick Wilson and "Juno" Oscar nominee Ellen Page on the map. The former
music-video director then released "30 Days," starring Josh Hartnett in the blood-
soaked comic book tale of an Alaskan town under siege by vampires.
Although some might say the connection makes sense, Slade's "Night" vampires were
so different from those imagined by Meyer that the two movies could be in completely
different genres. Twilighters will undoubtedly be curious to learn Slade's plans and
whether he'll embrace the fiercer tendencies of the Cullen family's instincts.
"American Pie" director Chris Weitz recently began filming "New Moon", the sequel to
"Twilight", in Vancouver.
The first film was a huge success with both UK and US audiences last year.
Twilight, which was directed by Catherine Hardwicke, topped the US box office in
November after taking $69.6m (£46.2m) on its first weekend - record opening takings
for a film by a female director.
Teenage actor Taylor Lautner will return in his role as mysterious Jacob Black in New
Moon, due for release in November, and War of the Worlds star Dakota Fanning will
also join the cast.
